Morgans at $12 ea??
is $12 each a good price for morgans? there is only 1 coin shop in town and that's there current price. what silver content is a morgan $ anyway? i heard it was about 71%. it seems like a big premium for the silver content, but i know there is some collectable value. i know there is probably millions of these still floating around the US, but does anyone have a speculation on the future collectability? or will they just follow the spot + $3?

Re: Morgans at $12 ea??
A new unworn Morgan contains .773 ounces of silver. I don't buy them, but they do seem to have a bit premium on them and I have no idea why.
For $12 you can buy 3 pre-1964 halves and get a bit over a full ounce of silver. |
Re: Morgans at $12 ea??
Morgan and Peace type dollars were struck with 90% silver. They contain .77344 oz. of silver.
They additionally have some value attributed to : Legal tender status, government guarantee re content and purity of silver, have unquestionable authenticity, and are readily recognized and accepted. What value an individual puts on these things needs to be added to the value of the silver the dollar contains. |
Re: Morgans at $12 ea??

Re: Morgans at $12 ea??
US Silver Dollars, including Morgans are the king of collectable US Coins. That's why they command a premium. Modern silver commemoratives are almost all silver dollars. Silver dollars just have an appeal as a large silver coin with some heft to them, and they conjure up images of the Wild West.

Re: Morgans at $12 ea??
I bought 3 today from my local shop. Got a 1878, 1879, and 1921. The 21 is real nice just dirty, the other two have some wear and rim marks. Paid $11.00 each.

Re: Morgans at $12 ea??
The local coin shop was wiped out of their morgans today (other than expensive certified ones). Even out of silver bullion. That was a first. Maybe we are in the same town grizzlyduck, huh?
